International Summer School at Technical University of Ostrava
The Department of Cybernetics and Biomedical Engineering of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics and Computer Science of VSB-TUO has prepared an International Summer School that took place 22–27 August 2021.

The Department of Cybernetics and Biomedical Engineering of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics and Computer Science of the VSB - Technical University of Ostrava (VSB-TUO) has prepared an International Summer School that took place between 22 – 27 August 2021.

The International Summer School on "Scientific Writing" is the result of a collaboration between VSB-TUO, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and the University of Vaasa. Experts from foreign partner institutions lectured the doctoral students on the basics of academic writing, literature search, and work with selected portals. The lectures also focused on international cooperation, the mobility opportunities, or the basics of project work, including the introduction of the Horizon Europe program. During the week, the participants of the summer school worked on an abstract of a scientific article accordingly to their research focus and were able to consult their ideas with the speakers present. The professional part of the event was complemented by a tour of the VSB-TUO campus, a visit to the Planetarium and the Lower Vítkovice area.

‘The summer school was a great opportunity to not only learn the know-how of academic writing, but also to network with the delegates, students from abroad as well as from VSB. One of the beneficial parts was the workshops conducted by Dr. Birgitta MartinKauppi where we could learn from her expertise in the writing of abstract, methodology and conclusion. The session on citation tools, databases also proved to be of great help as these tools are instrumental when writing a paper, ’

The summer school had an interesting topic, I learned interesting information from the field of scholarly literature: about databases, citation tools or systems for searching literature. During the workshop, I wrote a great part of abstract of a research article on sensory systems for monitoring geothermal parameters, which I continue to work on. A great benefit was the meeting with foreign speakers and their practically guided lectures,’ added Ing. Akshaya Raj, the doctoral student of the Department of Cybernetics and Biomedical Engineering from VSB-TUO. The summer school was attended by a total of 25 students from seven different countries. The lecturers were experienced researchers from different faculties of VSB-TUO as well as other partner universities from Czech Republic, Germany, Finland, and Poland.

The GeoUS project is funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 program (Grant Agreement 856670). Researchers from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, the Faculty of Civil Engineering and the Faculty of Mining and Geology are working together on the GeoUS project. The educational part of the project will, among other activities, include second summer school focusing on geothermal energy, which will take place in 2022.
