History, Current Focus, and Future Vision

The history of the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology (FMST) is closely linked to the history of the VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava (FMST), as the teaching of mining and metallurgy formed the foundation for the establishment of the Mining Academy in Příbram, whose history dates back to 1849.

By a decree of the President of the Republic dated September 8, 1945, the Mining Academy (Vysoká škola báňská) was relocated to Ostrava, where teaching began on November 1st in the field of mining (251 students enrolled) and metallurgy (113 students enrolled).

In 1951, two independent faculties were established: the Faculty of Mining and the Faculty of Metallurgy.

In 1991, due to the expansion of study programs and departments, the Faculty of Metallurgy was renamed the Faculty of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (FMMI).

With the current definition of its professional and educational profile, the Faculty respects the trends of scientific, technological, and social development. It actively responds to the interests of restructuring Czech industry and the development needs of the region in which it operates.

Faculty Vision:

The Faculty of Materials Science and Technology (FMST), as one of the traditional faculties of VŠB-TUO, aims for excellence in education, research, and innovation.

  • It offers education in the fields of technical sciences and industrial systems management.
  • It conducts high-quality scientific and research activities with an emphasis on the applicability of achieved results in practice.
  • It develops cooperation with international partners.
  • In its activities, it adheres to the principles of ethics, responsibility, and transparency.

FMT Quality Policy

The FMST Quality Policy is based on the VŠB-TUO Strategic Plan 2021 – 2027 and formulates the fundamental strategic approaches of the Faculty management in the area of quality across all its activities. By applying this policy in daily operations, we pursue the long-term satisfaction of current and future requirements of all stakeholders while effectively utilizing available resources.

The following principles are enforced in the management of the Faculty:

  1. Open access to all forms of study, including the application of the principle of equal opportunities for all applicants for study at the Faculty.
  2. Internationalization of the Faculty's educational, scientific, research, and other creative activities.
  3. Continuous improvement of all Faculty processes as a response to the dynamically evolving requirements of stakeholders and the results of scientific and technical development worldwide.
  4. Development and accreditation of existing and new study programs and fields in all types of study at the Faculty.
  5. Strengthening and development of partnerships with other organizations from the region, the Czech Republic, and abroad.
  6. Continuous development of the professional competence and creative potential of the Faculty staff, especially educators.

The effective and efficient application of these principles in the management of the Faculty, supported by a high-performing quality management system, will thus contribute to the systematic increase in the quality of education across all study programs and to the improvement of the scientific, research, and other creative activities of all Faculty staff. The Faculty management considers this a key factor for the long-term success of FMST in both the national and international context.
