Title
Design of specific mobile sensors for a sustainable SMART CITY concept
Code
SP2026/016
Summary
The goal of the submitted project is the design, development, integration and verification of a mobile sensor unit for monitoring air quality in an urban environment, intended primarily for installation on public transport vehicles or, for example, collection vehicles. The project focuses on creating an innovative system that will enable continuous and spatially detailed monitoring of air pollution in real time within the SMART CITY concept.
The objectives include the development of a hardware prototype of the sensor unit, the implementation of control firmware for the microcontroller and verification of the functionality of the system in real operating conditions. The project also seeks to verify the technical feasibility and operational reliability of the solution, its integration into urban data platforms and the evaluation of the benefit for the expansion of the urban sensor infrastructure.
An important part of the project is also the implementation of an economic evaluation of the designed system. These activities will include, among other things, measuring the effectiveness of the integration of the designed device into technological processes within the SMART CITY concept.
The result of the project solution will be a verified functional sample and firmware, representing the basis for the application of technology in practice - especially in supporting data-driven decision-making in the field of the environment and sustainable urban development.
The subject of research within the project is conceived on the basis of the high topicality of the given solution and a certain existing market gap in this area and is fully in line with the main themes of the Strategic Plan of FMT VŠB-TUO for the period 2021-2027, especially in the following research areas:
Control of modern industrial systems:
• Diagnostics and sensors of industrial processes
• Information systems and modeling for environmental protection in industry
• Advanced approaches and tools for managing sustainable performance of industrial systems
The outputs of the proposed project are of considerable importance for the selected objective of the National Priorities of Oriented Research, Experimental Development and Innovation.
The project uses new knowledge and technological principles in the field of generic cross-sectional technologies (GPTs) to achieve new useful properties of the product. Specifically, it is a mobile sensor unit for measuring air quality, which combines advanced sensors, microcontroller electronics and data infrastructure, creating an innovative system capable of providing spatially detailed and real-time data for smart cities in (SMART CITY), which expands the capabilities of current monitoring technologies and brings new functional features to the product. As mentioned above, the solution is defined in accordance with the principles of the SMART CITY concept and its integral part is an economic balance sheet analyzing the financially efficient use of digital infrastructure data.
