The project aims to cover the design, preparation, processing, and characterization of materials applicable in the engineering. The primary focus will be developing new techniques in materials characterization. The characterization works will mainly involve study of mechanical properties, microstructures, residual strain state, and mechanics of metallic materials, both before and after the optimized processing. Besides the conventional materials characterization techniques (like electron microscopy and so on), the novel methods (X-ray ptychography) that will be extensively employed in this project will shed light on the processing effect on materials performance at nanoscale and 3D, thus providing unprecedented understanding on the materials science subject. The research work will include cooperation with international research institute (e.g. X-ray synchrotron facilities) and Universities (e.g. Cambridge University). The acquired results of the project will be continuously published in impactful journals.

This project is co-funded by the European Union.

Dr. Phil. Zifan Wang

Zifan Wang is a scientist at the Diamond Light Source, the national synchrotron facility of the United Kingdom. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Aircraft Manufacturing Engineering from the Harbin Institute of Technology in China and earned his DPhil in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford. His research focuses on solid mechanics, advanced materials characterization, X-ray and neutron diffraction, shape memory alloys, and materials modelling.

He has extensive experience in leading international research projects, including positions at the University of Cambridge, and close collaboration with major synchrotron and neutron research facilities across Europe. He is the author of numerous highly cited publications in prestigious journals such as PNAS, Acta Materialia, and ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.
