Title
Atomic Design of Carbon-Based Materials for New Normal Society
Code
8F21007
Summary
Overall aim. The word “New Normal” has been used for economic conditions after the 2008 world financial crisis and more recently, for our emerging new lifestyles after the COVID19 pandemic. As shown in the project title, we aim at the “New Normal Society” as a goal to achieve an upgraded human-centred society, where the new technologies of the “Japanese Society 5.0” aim to solve the sustainable development goals and overcome the COVID19 pandemic. In order to achieve these ideals, our current technologies must undergo smart upgrades and developments that provide maximized sustainability and function within the strictest environmental protocols. In this project, we contribute to such a worldwide target via the development of advanced carbon-based materials (CBMs). These CBMs are key factors in every day applications and devices including rechargeable batteries, power generators, energy converters, mobile devices, reinforced materials, environmental filters, health care products, and medical services. Rationale. Our consortium is formed from representatives of each V4 country, Japan, and an external collaborator from US. We aim to develop the above target materials following the concept of “atomic design”, which has been difficult to achieve for traditional C-materials with disordered/amorphous frameworks. The tight collaborations within our consortium that includes experts of synthesis, analysis, and theoretical modelling make the concept of "atomic design" of CBMs a reality. Relevance. The consortium’s research directly addresses the call for advanced new materials for extreme environments and electronics and energy harvesting, such as gas storage, flexible electrode/supercapacitors/conductive thin-layers, microelectronics, and optically active materials with voltage/structure stability. The unique features of porous CBMs and our combined engineering expertise allows for targeting COVID19-related material design, such as high-performance mask, virus adsorption filters.
